Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, and Communication: A Personal Journey of a CEO in Times of Crisis

The Unexpected Storm
I will never forget that Friday afternoon. The sun had barely set in the city of Maputo when I received the call that would change the course of my career and, in some ways, my life. Our bank, a respected institution with decades of history in Mozambique, was about to undergo regulatory intervention.
The news spread like wildfire. On Monday, lines formed outside our branches, the phones wouldn’t stop ringing, and panic was palpable in the eyes of our employees. As the newly appointed CEO, I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. It was in that moment that I truly understood the power of emotional intelligence and strategic communication in leadership. It wasn’t enough to have a plan; it was crucial to convey confidence, empathy, and determination to a team on the brink of emotional collapse.
In the days that followed, I practiced self-awareness like never before. Every morning, before entering the office, I paused to assess my emotional state. I acknowledged my own anxiety and fear but also my determination to lead the team through this challenge.

The Power of Emotional Intelligence in Times of Crisis
I had to develop the ability to recognize and understand my emotions, strengths, and weaknesses. Strengthening self-awareness allowed me to be the beacon in the storm, helping each team member to grow and develop.
Self-regulation became my most valuable ally. When an angry customer shouted at one of our tellers, or when a colleague succumbed to stress, I took a deep breath and remained calm. My serenity became an inspiration to others.
Intrinsic motivation was what kept me standing during long nights of work and endless meetings with the regulator. It wasn’t just about saving the bank; it was about protecting the dreams and futures of thousands of Mozambicans who trusted us.
Empathy allowed me to genuinely connect with each team member. Listening to their concerns, understanding their fears, and recognizing their efforts created a bond of trust that proved invaluable.

Social skills were crucial for navigating the complex negotiations with the regulator, reassuring major corporate clients, and maintaining internal team cohesion.

The Importance of Strategic Communication in Rebuilding Trust
As we worked tirelessly to stabilize the bank, I realized that every word, every gesture, every email had the power to build or destroy trust. Strategic communication became our secret weapon in the battle for survival and recovery.
We implemented a communication plan on three fronts:

  1. Internal: Daily team meetings, transparent newsletters, and an open communication channel with leadership kept everyone aligned and motivated.
  2. Clients: Clear and honest messages about the bank’s situation, regular updates on progress, and an unwavering commitment to protecting their interests.
  3. General Public: A carefully orchestrated public relations campaign to rebuild the bank’s image, highlighting our resilience and commitment to Mozambique.

The key was to balance transparency with optimism, honesty with hope. Every communication was meticulously crafted to inspire trust without making unrealistic promises.

Digital Transformation: A New Chapter
Months of hard work began to bear fruit. Gradually, market confidence was restored. It was then that we realized: it wasn’t enough to return to “normal.” It was time to reinvent the bank for the future.
The decision to change our core banking system and embark on a digital transformation journey was as daunting as it was exciting. Once again, emotional intelligence and strategic communication proved indispensable.
We had to overcome challenges and define strategies:

  1. Resistance to Change: I used empathy to understand employees’ fears regarding digitalization. Active listening sessions and empowerment workshops helped alleviate anxieties.
  2. Technical Complexity: I translated complex technical concepts into accessible language, using metaphors and practical examples to create excitement around new possibilities.
  3. Market Pressure: I communicated clearly and frequently our vision of becoming the best experience in Mozambican banking, one that everyone felt proud to be part of. To be the most agile and innovative bank in Mozambique, thus inspiring the team to embrace change enthusiastically.
  4. Balancing Tradition and Innovation: I created narratives that honored our past while painting an exciting future, helping stakeholders see continuity in change.

Lessons Learned and the Way Forward
This journey taught me that true leadership transcends titles and hierarchies. It is about inspiring, empowering, and uplifting those around us, especially in times of uncertainty and change.
Emotional intelligence allowed me to navigate the turbulent waters of the crisis with empathy and resilience. Strategic communication was the vehicle through which we transformed fear into hope, uncertainty into opportunity.
Today, I look at our bank with a mix of pride and humility. Pride in what we have achieved together and humility in recognizing that our journey is far from over. The digital world presents new challenges and opportunities every day.
But now I know that with a united team, emotionally intelligent leadership, and clear and inspiring communication, there is no challenge we cannot overcome. We are not just writing the future of our bank; we are contributing to the economic and social progress of Mozambique.
In this new era of a digital, agile, and customer-centric bank, we will continue to lead not through fear or authority but through inspiration, empathy, and a shared vision of a better future for all.

Conclusion of the Story:
In a world where the only constant is change, the true leader is not the one who has all the answers, but the one who knows how to ask the right questions. It is the catalyst that, through emotional intelligence and strategic communication, unleashes the latent potential in each individual and in the team as a whole. This leader understands that every interaction is an opportunity to inspire, every challenge a chance to grow, and every achievement a moment to celebrate collectively. By mastering the subtle art of feeling and communicating, the leader not only guides their team through the storms of the present but also prepares them to thrive in the uncertainties of the future. Truly transformative leadership is not just about achieving results but creating a lasting legacy. It is about cultivating an environment where innovation flourishes, where individuals feel valued and empowered, and where success is measured not just in numbers but in the positive impact made on the lives of others and the world around us. By embracing the power of emotional intelligence and strategic communication, today’s leaders are not just managing teams; they are shaping the future, one conversation at a time, one decision at a time, one moment at a time. And in this process, they are not just leading organizations; they are inspiring a new generation of leaders.
