G20 Empower Conference

The SPROWT Foundation participated in the G20 Empower conference on Women’s Empowerment: Alliance for Empowerment and Progression of Women’s Economic Representation, held in Kerala, India. As part of the South African delegation, the Head for BRICS WBA Mozambique and the President of SPROWT Foundation took part in the two-day event that encompassed several sessions and three panels. These panels focused on various topics such as Advancing Women’s Entrepreneurship through Mentoring & Capacity Building, Market Access and Financing, Role of STEM Education & Innovation for Scaling up Businesses, Enabling Leadership across all levels including Corporate Leadership and Leadership at Grassroots, Holistic Wellbeing and Coping with Corporate Burnout, Increasing Investment for Quality & Reach of Education, Digital Skilling, and Future Job Opportunities. Other sessions included Enabling ‘School-to-Work’ Transitions and Career Development Opportunities, Enabling Infrastructure for the Care Economy, and Navigating Corporate Culture for Women Empowerment (Session with CHROs).

The G20 Alliance for the Empowerment and Progression of Women’s Economic Representation (G20 EMPOWER) is a collaborative effort between the government and private sectors to accelerate women’s leadership and empowerment in the private sector across G20 countries. Launched in 2019, this initiative aims to be the most inclusive and action-driven alliance among businesses and governments. As our President stated, “The G20 Empowerment conference was personally an opportunity for me to learn and understand how countries worldwide are acting in matters of gender equality and women’s empowerment. It was a breath of much-needed freshness, shedding light on how globally, governments and the private sector are committing to the growing consciousness of the role of women at all levels, as well as changing historical biases related to women.”

“The conference emphasized how the alignment of different stakeholders is crucial for women’s inclusion and empowerment. I witnessed India’s outstanding achievements in women’s participation at all levels, with a common thread being government-led initiatives – the number of programs, projects, opportunities, and commitments initiated to support women-led organizations and those impacting girls and women directly.”

Participating in the G20 Empower conference was an honor, providing a platform to share SPROWT’s mission and vision, and how Mozambique (both public and private sectors) are engaged in women’s progress. As part of the conference, delegates committed to their pledges. As part of SPROWT’s ongoing commitment, we pledge to “continuously uplift girls and women in Mozambique and internationally, promoting more women in executive and leadership positions, developing programs and projects in an inclusive ecosystem, and partnering at national and international levels to support and add value to corporations, organizations, and civil society.”

Lifelong learning, education, access to finance, and accelerating digital inclusion are key drivers for economic progress and societal sustainability.
